About the Game

Step Words is a daily word puzzle about getting from one word to another, one step at a time.

Each day has a new puzzle. You can also go back and play earlier ones from the calendar. No account needed.

How to Play: Step Words

Your goal is to build a five-step path from the starting 4-letter word to the ending 5-letter word. The start and end words are already given, so you only need to enter the four words in between.

Your four words must follow these rules, in order:

Change one letter
Change one letter again
Add one letter
Change one letter

Your last entered word is not the ending word itself, it should still be one letter change away from the ending 5-letter word.

Letters must stay in the same order, there is no rearranging
Each word must be valid and cannot repeat
You must complete each step in order before reaching the end word

Scoring

Base score: 10 points for your first completed solution
If your base path includes any rare words, you’ll earn +1 extra point per rare word
After solving, you can submit alternate solutions with at least one new word
Each new common word earns +1 point
Each new rare word earns +2 points

Color Guide

Orange box: Incomplete word
Red box: Invalid or repeated word
Red line: Invalid step (wrong letter change)
Green box: Valid common word
Purple box: Valid rare word (bonus points!)

How to Play Step Words

Change one letter at a time, making valid English words.

Invalid entries will be highlighted when you tap Submit. — Invalid entries will be highlighted when you tap Submit.

You can’t skip to the end word early or rearrange letters.

If all words are valid, you’ll earn points based on time and word rarity.
